How do you test for MTHFR mutation? This video will discuss how to do genetic testing for MTHFR gene mutation. There are basically a few different methodologies to go about testing for MTHFR Mutation.  Some methods with pros and cons to each of them all of them give me some interesting information. Maybe more importantly is why you or your functional medicine practitioner would even look at this to begin with. There are certain lab values that are off I'll share with you some of the things that make me think someone might have MTHFR mutation. Here are a few places to get tested. https://www.mthfrdoctors.com/product/methylation-report/?ref=88ylvtzj https://mthfrsupport.com/ **MY COURSE ⭐️ : Get real-world troubleshooting and personal guidance to optimize your health through genetics with this comprehensive MTHFR course. http://discover-holistic-health-academy.thinkific.com/courses/mthfr-gene-therapy-demystified-crack-the-genetic-code-to-better-health **MY BOOK 📕 : Skip the common pitfalls and fast-track your journey to optimal health. https://geni.us/y6lNt (Amazon Affiliate Link) so how do you test for MTHFR mutation there are three basic ways that I would sort of categorize testing for MTHFR mutations and all these are valid ways to do it and I utilize all of them but some may be a little bit more reliable and some may come with some privacy issues depending on your preferences may steer you in one direction or another so we'll get into that in a second but first why would you test for MTHFR to begin with it's always nice to know and there's a few different health circumstances that you know I encourage people to test when these circumstances are present but you know whether or not everyone should know their MTHFR status as is debatable for sure but I don't I don't think it's necessarily something that everyone needs to do if it's inexpensive and easily accessible for you may be worthwhile but it's it's not something that should be mandated by any means but if you're having certain health issues then it probably is a good idea so usually you know when I'm looking at this in people  they are have they are coming to me for specific health issues and the things in lab values that make me think there may be an M th of our problem our MTHFR mutation is unexplained elevated MCV MCV is called mean corpuscular volume and it's part of the red blood cell or part of a way to look at your red blood cells it basically tells us about the relative size or volume of the cells and so when that's always high this could be a reason having an MTHFR alteration or some other methylation problem could cause the MCB to be elevated so usually we want to address that with b12 first but in some cases if we know you have MTHFR that could also explain that and definitely the two driving factors for that in most instances all to do with b12 and folate you could just have a relative folate deficiency – but that's pretty uncommon in this day and age and so if it's not b12 most likely there's there could be an issue with MTHFR and the other lab value factor that makes me think about this is homocysteine so unexplained consistently elevated homocysteine would also suggest the same two factors so those are two tests you can sort of look at and see if maybe I do maybe I don't but they're not absolute so you can have a normal MCD and a normal cysteine and still have a significant problem with your methylfolate status in your body meaning you're deficient and that is stemming from an MTHFR mutation it's probably less rare that that's happening but it still can't happen and there's some reasons for that that we're not going to dive into here symptom wise there's other potential things that make me think about this there are a lot of symptoms that can come about from MTHFR but the most common in terms of the research what's documented is mental health issues like anxiety and depression and specifically when there's a lack of response from typical antidepressants and conventional treatments it's not to say that those are the only ways to to treat anxiety and depression and there's certainly many other ways and many other reasons for that that have nothing to do with methylation and have nothing to do with antidepressants but when you've been treated with antidepressants and you don't respond that could be from a lack of this methyl folate which is needed to produce some of your neurotransmitters to begin with and so when antidepressants are having their effect they may have less of a pool to actually work with and therefore neurotransmitters to work with and therefore may elicit a reduced response and this is pretty well documented as well that some people that are not responding to antidepressants there's an increased correlation with MTHFR being and in that sense - I would put fatigue in that category - because oftentimes depression can manifest as fatigue
