In this video, we review chapter one of How Learning Works. In this chapter, Ambrose et al. (2016) explore how students' prior knowledge can either help or hinder their learning of new concepts. Prior knowledge should be effectively activated by instructors to prepare students for learning. Potential issues arise when prior knowledge is insufficient, inappropriate, or inaccurate.
