How I Knit a Wool Hat: easy basic pattern to follow

Using #8US (5mm) short cord, 16”, circular needles Worsted weight yarn If using a DK weight use two strands Cast on 58 sts for kid’s size 68 sts for adult size Ribbing (K1,P1) for 3” (covers the ear nicely giving warmth) Note: sometimes I double the rim, knit up to 5-6” and fold up the brim adding extra warmth for over the ear. Needles: #8US 16” (or 5mm 16” ). (This is a very short cord. When I cast on 58 or 68 stitches it is possible to join the stitches in the round. No need for DP needles.) For shaping the crown I switch to #7US DP needles. In shaping the crown you will be decreasing gradually, bringing your work in gradually until you have about 12 stitches on the needles. After the ribbing is complete I continue in Stockinette stitch in the round for 6” (I don’t change needle size as some patterns call for). Begin decreasing Divide your stitches evenly onto four DP needles (I use #7US) ssk at the beginning of each row, decreasing on the corners ssk is (slip, slip, knit) Decrease on each round until you have about 12 stitches left (4 on each needle) Cut your yarn leaving a long tail Thread the long tail onto a plastic needle (darning needle) and pull the thread through the remaining stitches, pull it up tight and sew. I often pull the needle and thread through to the inside of the hat and secure it there.
