ALL RIGHTS BELONG TO THEIR RESPECTIVE OWNERS* The new-look pels are now looking like one of the brightest young teams in the NBA. Obviously with it Zion's debut as well, as this summers #1 overall pick. It's understandable that he's gonna draw all the clicks, retweets and attention. Especially when he's lifting the crowd off their seats every other play, with monster dunks that evidently no opposing defender wants any part of. Jrue Holiday and Brandon Ingram had performances worth mentioning as well, with 21 and 19 points apiece. But last night what was most interesting to me anyway was that we got to see Lonzo play with freedom, that we never saw under Luke Walton in LA. He actually was allowed to play the point guard position, and be himself for the first time in forever on a basketball court. Overall in 25 minutes of playing time, Lonzo posted, 9 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds, and a block. Helping the Pels on their way to a blowout 133-109 win over a talented young hawks team. While he shot just 3 of 10 from the field good for just 30%, those 3 made field goals came from the perimter. Where he shot 3 of 8, making 37% of his three point shots. This is perhaps the biggest takeaway from this game. Because Lonzo's shooting has been a huge flag for concern since coming into the league. He shot 30% as a rookie, and 33% from a sophomore. I know it's just one preseason game, but if he can maintain that 37% throughout next season. Then Lonzo's gonna be a big problem next season. He's appeared to have addressed his shooting form in the offseason, making minor tweaks to his release point that will make the world of difference. We saw him last night shoot with a level of confidence we rarely see from Lonzo. He comfortably knocked down two shots off the catch and even brought out his trademark iso stepback three. A move he used back at UCLA to deliver the game sealing dagger against the oregon ducks back in college, which he also pulled out of the back against the Denver last year. A game where you could see Zo seeking revenge against Jamal Murray and the Nuggets. Lonzo also displayed more of his elite defense we've seen over the past two seasons, early in the first quarter he blocked a shot under the basket. Before leading the fastbreak, receiving a return pass from Holiday and dumping it off in the lane to Zion for a two-handed throwdown. The Zo-Zion duo lived up to the hype early, with Ball assisting Williamson a series of times during the first half. Although we never got to see him throw up any sort of lob that's been teased all through the offseason, that perhaps there saving for their opener at the smoothie king arena. Lonzo also had a nice pick and pop assist from a three in a half court setting, a play very simple but similar to one his younger brother Lamelo had over in his debut in australia. I'm not jumping the gun and psychoanalyze what kind of season Zo's gonna have based on such a small sample size of playing time. But Lonzo more than exceeded my expectations in last night's game. Remember this is the first competitive basketball game since January of this year, and he seemed completely unphased in a new role and situation with a new crop of players. I'll maybe make a longer video going more into depth about why I feel Lonzo's in for a breakout and perhaps MIP season. Depending on whether or not you guys wanna see that. By now we should all know what Lonzo brings to the table, he's shown already in the NBA that he's capable of averaging near triple double numbers. All while playing near all nba caliber defense. So if he can continue to get more consistent with his shot, which based on the evidence we have so far. He's making progress in working towards, then we can expect big things in new Orleans. Perhaps as soon as this season, because in a fresh start and new situation with new toys to play with. We can only expect Lonzo to keep getting better and better. Gullible
