This paper maps the developing human fetal cortex with spatial transcriptomics at single-cell resolution and shows that molecular layer identity emerges before classic histologic layer boundaries are visible. It also shows that cortical arealization follows more than one developmental logic, with gradual anterior–posterior transitions across many regions but a sharp molecular boundary between V1 and V2 by mid-gestation.
