Although traditionally the blanket and buttonhole stitches are used for different purposes (reinforcing the edge of a blanket or a buttonhole), they have the same basic steps so I am using the term interchangeably here. The buttonhole stitch I am demonstrating around this flower shape is purely decorative and can be used in a variety of ways.
A few tips:
- The buttonhole stitch is traditionally worked in a straight line, though for decorative purposes it can be used in a circle, or really any shape.
- Stitches can either be close together, creating a fill stitch, or farther apart to highlight the shape of the stitch.
- The "spokes" of the stitch can be varying lengths - however you want to use them in your embroidery design.
- The stitch is accessible to a beginner, though working the stitches closer together may take some practice.
