How to create a failure envelop using numerical methods
This video shows the steps to take in creating a failure envelop using numerical methods. In this instance, it is based on ABAQUS. A unidirectional composite has been used to demonstrate how the failure envelop will work. E-glass fibre and polypropylene matrix with a fibre volume fraction of 35% was used here. The implementation was illustrated using the story of Ella - a 1st year PhD student, who is looking to create (based on supervisor's instructions) a failure envelop for the test composite she is studying. The video has shown the concept of combined loading and how this will be implemented within an RVE imposed with a periodic boundary condition. Test case studies were a combination of tensile and pure shear deformations and the second is a combination of compressive uniaxial loading with a pure shear combined loading. Periodic boundary condition was imposed using a bespoke software called PBCGenLiteV1.0 Results were extracted using the principle of virtual work and stress-strain plots of the uniaxial and shear stresses were generated from which strength properties were extracted for use in the expected failure envelope. #FailureEnvelop #NumericalFailureEnvelop #CombinedLoading #CMVideos #PBCGenLite #periodicboundaryconditions #abaqustutorial #RVEModelling Time stamps -------------------------------------- You can quickly navigate through the videos using these chapters. 00:00 Intro 00:33 Video outline 01:10 Introduction to Failure Envelops 05:21 Implementing Combined Loading with PBCs 07:25 Case Study: UD Composite 10:14 ABAQUS step-by-step guide 16:30 Applying PBCs using PBCGenLite 19:30 Results from simulations 20:50 Extracting the stress-strain curve 23:48 Using strength data to form failure envelop 25:22 Outro -------------------------------------- 📥* DOWNLOADABLE RESOURCES Please click on this link for ABAQUS input files, Python scripts used in the video as well as the Excel spreadsheet. https://michaelokereke.activehosted.com/f/5 -------------------------------------- 📥* DOWNLOAD LINK TO PBC SOFTWARE *PBCGenLite: A software for implementing Periodic Boundary Conditions on 2D RVEs - https://cmvideos.ck.page/products/pbc-gen-lite-v1pt0 -------------------------------------- 👨👩👦 CM Video Insider Become a CM Video Insider (100% free) to access modelling resources, advanced workshops, bonus trainings, behind the scene contents and regular CM Video updates: https://cmvideos.ck.page/16a99bd0e3 ✔️*Link to Michael Okereke's Finite Element Applications textbook -------------------------------------- Okereke, M. and Keates, S., 2018.
