How To Grind By Hand
Episode 29 Hello everyone! I don’t have any power grinding machines, so whenever I need to grind a blade, I use abrasives and a honing guide. I used to use a coarse diamond plate, but I found three problems with that - They’re expensive They’re not actually coarse enough and progress is slow. They go dull Using abrasive paper solves the first two problems, and because it’s cheap, the third problem isn’t an issue. There is some clear advantages over using a machine. You don’t have to buy a machine. And find a place for it. There’s almost no danger, noise or flying sparks or dust. The only drawbacks I can find over using machines is that it takes longer and you need to use some effort. Not shown in the video is all the time I spent researching to come up with a good sequence. I ground the bevels of I think 11 chisels! In this episode, I’ve deliberately used a large thick chisel to show the worst case scenario. Including polishing and sharpening, it took over six hours to get it to the test stage, with the grinding taking four and half hours of that. Whilst researching, I changed the Primary Bevel angle of a Lie-Nielsen 1/4 inch (6mm) chisel to 20º in less than half an hour. Production Notes: Building the Extension got to a critical stage and I had to pause work on my channel for several weeks to focus on that. This episode took 40 hours to make, over 10 four hour sessions.
