How to Lay Decking | Wickes

In this video, we will show you how to lay a beautiful timber deck that creates a seamless outdoor living space for you and your family. Follow our step-by-step guide from the our experts to ensure a successful, durable result. A timber deck can offer you a seamless link between your home and your garden, as well as, be the perfect outdoor space for you and your family to relax and spend time outside. 1. Planning & Groundwork: Draw your deck to scale, noting that deck boarding governs the size. If laying over a lawn, dig out 50mm and cover the ground with landscaping fabric. Avoid overly wet areas. 2. Wall Plate: If joining the house, attach a wall plate. Use washers to separate the timber from the wall, preventing trapped water. 3. Frame Construction (Outer Frame & Bearers): Build the outer frame first. Install internal joists (bearers) at 400mm intervals. Allow for a slight 2mm per meter fall away from the house to ensure proper rainwater run-off. 4. Support & Levelling: Attach staggered noggins for crucial frame support. Complete the final levelling once all framework is secured. 5. Laying Deck Boards: Start laying the deck boards (trimming with a saw if necessary). Use a timber off-cut as a spacer to maintain even gaps between adjacent boards. Use a jigsaw for intricate cuts around obstacles. 6.Aftercare: If your deck is in a shady area, plan to treat and clean the wood annually to maintain its condition.
