Before running a multiple regression, an analyst should look at scatterplots of the variables to check for relationships in addition to checking for curvature and unusual points - things that could affect the accuracy of our regression results. A scatterplot matrix is convenient because it shows in one picture how each of the X-variables relates to the response and how the X-variables relate to each other.
