This video will show you how to successfully place a Queen Excluder in your bee hive. When the Queen is laying lots of eggs and the workers are bringing in lots of stores - it's usually the right time to add a honey super with an excluder below it. An excluder is a thin layer of metal or plastic rails which allows workers to pass through from below to above BUT prevents the queen from passing through. I prefer metal excluders over plastic. But, if you are going to need to treat for mites - you should have that figured out BEFORE you go in! Also, you likely want to know (approx) how much honey you're hoping to leave for your bees at close of the season NOT just how much YOU want to TAKE! Once you've placed the excluder . . . the queen is confined to an area where you can be sure all the brood will be concentrated. I choose to use a metal excluder because it's easier to clean. And, I put a notch in the front of the excluder which serves as an additional entry for the workers. Enjoy the simple video and follow the steps I take to add a Queen Excluder and increase your honey yields while protecting the brood from being caught up in future honey extraction. Enjoy!
