The 3 main things to think about when buying a BCD are: 1) Saftey & Stutablility -What kind of diving will I be doing? -Will the BCD have enough lift for my diving equipment? -Do I need a jacket or back inflate BCD? -Do I need a wing and harness system? -Do I need a travel BCD? 2) Comfort and Ease of Use -Is the BCD available in my size? -Is it comfortable? -Can I reach my dump valves and weight pockets? -Do I want a standard inflator or an alternate inflator? -Does it have weight pockets? -Does it have trim pockets or can they be added? 3) Is Service Available? -Do you have a shop that can service your BCD nearby? — Most manufacturers recommend bringing in your BCD for service once a year. In this service, most dive centers will clean your BCD and service your BC inflator. -Are you willing to mail out your BCD for service if you do not have a local shop that can service it?
