How to Remove and Replace a Trailer Axle | SIMPLE STEPS
In this step-by-step tutorial, we guide you through the entire process of removing and replacing your trailer axle. Whether you're upgrading or replacing a damaged axle, this video provides clear, easy-to-follow instructions for every step. We cover everything from taking off your old hub and brake assemblies, to completely removing the old axle, and installing the new one. You'll also learn how to properly wire your new axle and secure all the components back on it once more. No matter your skill level, this detailed guide will walk you through each phase with tips and techniques to ensure a successful axle replacement. To replace a trailer axle begin by jacking the trailer up in the air. Once the trailer is off the ground and stably supported, remove the wheel and tire assemblies off the axle needing replaced. Once the wheel and tires are removed, pound off the dust caps attached to the hubs. Once the inside components of the hub are exposed begin by removing the cotter pin or tang washer that holds the spindle nut in place. Once free, unthread the spindle nut and remove the washer between the nut and outer bearing. Next slide the hub off the spindle and remove the access grease. Repeat the same process on the other side of the axle. If the axle has brakes snip the wires attaching the brakes to the axle and main harness of the trailer and unbolt the brakes. Once unbolted completely remove the brakes from the axle leaving just the bare beam left. Once the hubs and brakes are removed from the axle, detach the axle from the springs by unbolting the U-Bolts. When the U-Bolts holding the springs onto the axle on both sides are removed, slide the axle beam out from under the trailer. Once the old axle is removed slide the new axle into place attaching it to the springs with a new U-Bolt Kit. Then slide the brakes back into place and bolt them to the brake flange on the axle. Wire the brakes the the trailer before putting the hubs back on to make for an easier process. When wiring electric trailer brakes to a trailer the wires are not polarized so matching up the wires doesn't apply. As long as on the driver side of the trailer one wire from the harness, one wire from the brake, and one wire from the axle beam are used in one wire nut. In addition to the same combination with the second set of wires, the brakes will properly function. Once the brakes are wired up correctly slide the hub onto the spindle along with the washer. Fasten down the hub using the castle nut to simply snug up the hub. Pound the dust cap back on and bolt the wheel and tire assembly back onto the hubs to complete the removing and installation of a trailer axle.
