I didn't want to rent a post-hole digger because I knew I would have to call 411 and get permission before I dig, so instead I wanted to pull out the old post and just reuse the existing hole. This video shows how I did it. Be advised, while this method didn't cost me any money (aside from putting a gift card in the mailbox with a note that says "sorry") it did take about 3 hours from start to finish. My guess is that a factory finished post would be a lot easier to pull out of the ground (this post had knobs that gave it more friction to work against me pulling it out).
