In this video, I show you how to use simultaneous equations with linear equations to solve word problems through 5 different exam-style examples. The aim of this lesson is to help build your confidence by working through a variety of question types step by step. Use the timestamps below if you’d like to jump to a specific question. A basic understanding of solving simultaneous equations using the elimination and substitution methods will be helpful, so I’ve also linked my other lessons on these topics below. Timestamps: Question 1 00:14 Find 2 numbers with a sum of 15 & a difference of 4. Question 2 02:48 The line y=mx+c passes through (2,5) & (4,13). Find m & c. Question 3 06:20 A gardener buys 50 carrot seeds & 20 lettuce seeds for £1.10 & her mother buys 30 carrot seeds & 40 lettuce seeds for £1.50. Find the cost of 1 carrot seed & 1 lettuce seed. Question 4 11:30 Thirty tickets were sold for a concert, some at 60 pence & the rest at £1. If the total raised was £22 , how many had the cheaper tickets? Question 5 15:39 A wallet containing $40 has 3 times as many $1 notes as $5 notes. Find the number of each kind. 👉 Answer to the “Try It Yourself” question: 15 two-cent coins & 25 five-cent coins More lessons like this on the channel @themathsprof 😊
