How-to-Use a Rivnut Installation Tool Hardware Kit

We heard you're having trouble getting started with your Rivnut Install Tool... don't worry - we understand! It takes a second to get the hang of, but once you do, you'll be installing these like a pro! Follow along with Ryan as he uses one of our 001001 Hardware Kits we include in your Bedside Rack or Bulkhead Accessory Rail kit, to install the Rivnuts needed to keep your gear secured. Firstly, you'll need measure and mark exactly where you'll need to drill, then bore out your 3/8" holes (they might need to be just slightly bigger, move that bit around!) to install the Rivnuts we included in your kit. We ALWAYS recommend using a ring of silicone around your Rivnuts to seal the raw metal from exposure to the elements. We will also often recommend touching up the raw metal areas with a paint pen before installing the Rivnuts if you really want to avoid any risk of rust. Side note on torque specs, there isn't a single torque specification for a 1/4-20 rivet nut; the correct torque depends on the rivet nut's material, the bolt's strength grade, and the base material the rivet nut is installed in, but a typical steel rivet nut may require around 6-12 ft-lbs to achieve proper clamping. The critical factor is to not exceed the rivet nut's maximum torque rating to prevent damage or stripping. We find that once it gets relatively difficult to turn the wrenches/socket you're using, you should be set!
