How to Use Compression on Vocals - Detailed Tutorial

In this video we are going to show you how to use compression on vocals, and we will do that by having a practical session together. In this session, we will cover a few fundamental details about compression and talk about some of the different types of compression, but most importantly, we will work on a project and compare the before and after results to best understand the impact of our work. Cheat Sheet below: 1. Apply a simple compressor. 2:1 to 3:1 ratio. Adjust the Attack and Release based on the "speed" of the singer. The faster the singing, the faster the Attack and Release. Do not exaggerate with them. The compressor needs to engage and release rapidly enough. I don't recommend adding make-up gain here, as we want to concentrate at bringing the peaks down for now. 2. Use another compressor to make the final adjustment over the vocals, to bring the lows and peaks as close as you like. It can be any type of compressor, including a stock one, which will do fine. Don't rush here, take your time. At this stage you can add make-up gain as well. 3. Add a compressor that will give your vocals a specific sound. Something that will add the final touch over levelling the sound and that will make it unique. e.g. - For Hip-Hop vocals, I recommend CLA-3A from Waves. Explore and try as many compressors and algorithms, there are plenty out there. REMEMBER - Practice makes perfect. Close your eyes and let the ears guide you!
