The hydraulic model test "air intake" investigates options of reducing gas bubbles in pump installations. A centrifugal pump should draw in as little unresolved gas as possible. Gas bubbles could collect in its centrifugal force field, in the impeller or casing, and interfere with the flow. Whether or not air enters the water depends on the position of the inlet pipe in the tank and on the flow rate. Air intake causes vortices, which influence the smooth running and output of the pump. Curtain walls or balcony-like structures can minimise or prevent the ingress of air into the fluid handled.
