Hydrofoils are super interesting types of ship, equipped with submerged wings. When hydrofoil moves fast enough, hydrofoil generates enough lift for the whole ship to go above water and, basically, fly! This reduces the drag and allows hydrofoil to move very fast. Much faster than any conventional ship with similar power and displacement.
I took a hydrofoil ride when I was still a kid, from Szczecin to Świnoujście in Poland. That is around 60km over the Szczecin Lagoon and Odra river. Quite memorable experience!
