Hōkūleʻa: Path through the Pacific
Hōkūleʻa is a modern recreation of an ancient Polynesian long-distance voyaging canoe. In June 2025, she and her sister vessel, Hikianalia, restarted the Moananuiākea voyage around the Pacific from Hilo, Hawaiʻi. The 43,000-nautical-mile journey started in Alaska in 2023, and will cover hundreds of ports in nearly 40 countries and almost 100 indigenous territories by 2028. Hawaii News Now’s Māhealani Richardson and Jon Suyat traveled with the canoes in French Polynesia to bring us a special look at their “Path through the Pacific.” 00:00 Start 01:15 Sacred arrival in Raʻiātea 03:30 Stopping in Moʻorea 06:59 Cultural exchange 11:50 Celebration in Papeʻetē 15:43 Shell Vaʻa outrigger canoe champion Visit our website for more Hōkūleʻa-related content: https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/news/hokulea-path/ Get the latest Hawaii news: https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/ Subscribe to our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/hawaiinews?sub_confirmation=1
