I miei Occhiali

This morning, picking up my old black Ray-Bans, the phrase by Battiato came to mind: “There are those who wear sunglasses to have more charisma and symptomatic mystery.” It’s an ironic phrase from the artist, highlighting the fact that sunglasses, apart from protecting you from the sun, can give the wearer a more charismatic , detached and slightly enigmatic appearance. Hiding your eyes can, in fact, make a person seem more interesting, confident or “mysterious”, because it reduces what others are able to read in their face. The expression “symptomatic mystery” is deliberately witty and sophisticated, and does not indicate a real mystery, but a carefully constructed aura of allure. Questa mattina, prendendo i miei vecchi RayBan neri, mi è venuta alla mente la frase di Battiato “C’è chi si mette degli occhiali da sole per avere più carisma e sintomatico mistero”. È una frase ironica dell’artista che stigmatizza il fatto che gli occhiali da sole, oltre a proteggere dal sole, possono dare a chi li indossa un’aria più carismatica, distaccata e un po’ enigmatica. Nascondere gli occhi può, infatti, far sembrare una persona più interessante, sicura di sé o “misteriosa”, perché riduce quello che gli altri riescono a leggere del suo volto. L’espressione “sintomatico mistero” è volutamente buffa e raffinata e non indica un mistero reale, ma un alone di fascino costruito.
