Health care providers will start using ICD-10 instead of ICD-9 medical codes on October 1, 2015. This animated video from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) uses diabetes to show how ICD-10 codes improve on ICD-9. The expanded structure of ICD-10 codes captures more detail about a patient’s condition. For example, unlike ICD-9, ICD-10 codes distinguish between type 1 and type 2 diabetes. ICD-10 diabetes codes describe underlying conditions or causes as well as complications. With ICD-10, important details about a patient’s diabetes can be easily communicated across health care providers and over time. To find out more about ICD-10, visit http://www.cms.gov/ICD10.
