A playthrough of Nintendo's 1985 action game for the NES, Ice Climber. In this video, I play through all thirty-two stages. The game loops after that, and there is no ending. Ice Climber, a North American NES launch game, was one of those iconic "black box" games that aimed to showcase the potential of Nintendo's new console. The NES version landed seven months after the release of Vs. Ice Climber (an enhanced arcade port of the Famicom game running on Nintendo's Famicom-based Vs. system), and it left quite an impression. Such a faithful home version of a contemporary arcade game would've been incredibly impressive in 1985. In Ice Climber, Popo and Nana have to make their way to the top of the mountain. They carry giant mallets that can be used to stun enemies and bash through the layers of ice and rock that block the way, and once they've reached the summit, they can collect vegetables and hitch a ride on a condor for big bonus points. Though it has never been a favorite of mine, I've always liked Ice Climber. It's a fun, simple, and challenging run-and-jumper that expands on the gameplay mechanics seen in Donkey Kong and Mario Bros, most notably in its use of a smoothly scrolling playfield. My only real gripe with it is how stiff the controls are. Ice Climber is old - it predates Super Mario Bros. by nine months - and it feels every bit its age. To be fair, it has always seemed that way to me. I thought it felt ancient as a kid playing it back in the late 80s. Ice Climber isn't a game that I play often, but it's a neat time capsule, and whenever I'm in the mood for a Nintendo branded smackdown, it never leaves me hanging. _____ No cheats were used during the recording of this video.
