The research essay promises significance by design because it is a problem-solution genre, and that significance, or payoff, is expressed most clearly in the conclusion by drawing logical implications and practical applications. It is not enough in a research essay to conclude with a short summary paragraph, for what is expected is not only summary but also several application paragraphs explaining the significance of the thesis, or main points, by drawing significant implications and applications.
