This piece is a series of short, cadenza-like variations based on the row Schoenberg used in Klavierstucke op. 33a. Kandinsky and Schoenberg were friends and artistic allies, so it seemed appropriate to use one of Schoenberg's famous rows to explore how Kandinsky might have heard his Composition VIII (1923) canvas.
