Infested Waters - by Ryan Terry Ryan Terry - clarinet 1, 2, 3, 4 Recorded in October 2022. “Infested Waters” contains a few extended techniques that require some instruction: Fluting: Take the mouthpiece and barrel off the clarinet. Blow at an angle into the upper joint similarly to how you blow over a glass bottle to create a pitch. I have found that blowing from the side is more effective for me than blowing over the top (see image). It will take a bit of experimenting with lip placement and air flow, but you’ll know you are successful when it creates the tone of a flute. On the sheet music, if you finger the lower notes while “fluting”, it should roughly produce the pitches of the higher notes notated in parenthesis. You might experiment with different fingerings on your clarinet to ensure that the higher pitches come out. If this technique proves to be too challenging, play the higher notes in parenthesis normally, but down an octave. Optionally, you may begin the piece at measure 17 - when the “fluting” technique comes back at measure 80, play the higher notes down an octave. Blow “shh”: With your mouth on your clarinet like normal, make a “shh” sound through the instrument to mimic the sound of wind. Use a different fingering on each “gust of wind” to change the timbre. Super trill: The trills at the beginning can all be played unusually fast by rapidly alternating between two different fingerings of one of the trilled notes. In order of appearance on the score: - F trill: trill from F to G, alternating between both pinky fingerings of F. - D trill: trill from D to Eb, alternating between the sidekey Eb and the chromatic Eb fingerings. - G trill: trill from G to A, alternating between the normal A and the sidekey A fingerings. - C trill: trill from C to D, alternating between both pinky fingerings of C.
