This lecture is part of a series on advanced differential equations: asymptotics & perturbations. This lecture uses the mutiple-scale method to study the behavior boundary layers that occur in time-dependent problems, including initial layers and rapid transition regions in relaxation oscillations. Thus these are singular perturbation problems for initial value problems.
