I found this video on LinkedIn. I really appreciated this post and wanted to build on it with a Yes, And... plus a construction twist... Link to LinkedIn Post from Granny&Smith - I couldn't find this video on their YouTube channel, but wanted to give credit. Construction Innonvation Twist In recent years, a disturbing trend has emerged across the AEC industry: Construction firms are dismantling their innovation departments or pivoting their focus entirely toward venture capital and technology investments. Meanwhile BIM/VDC departments still live in silos until there is tech glitch or the network goes down on the jobsite. While chasing the next AI unicorn has its place, we are losing sight of what innovation actually is. It is not a department, a title, or a software subscription: It is a mindset dedicated to improving life. Innovation vs. Investment: Shifting focus solely to VC treats innovation as something you buy rather than something you build. The "Unicorn" Trap: We have become so enamored with tech tools that we’ve forgotten the people those tools are meant to serve. The Cost of Silence: When innovation is siloed, the rest of the organization feels they no longer have "permission" to be creative. Innovation is the New Safety In construction, we say "everyone owns safety." It’s a core value, not a checklist. We must treat innovation with the same universal ownership. A truly innovative company doesn't need a dedicated department; it needs a culture that empowers every employee, from the C-suite to the field, to share ideas without fear. The video below (linked in comments) tells the story of a janitor who saved his factory by calling the CEO with a bold idea. This wasn’t a selfish play for personal gain; it was an act of innovation to save the livelihoods of his entire team. This is the spirit we need: the belief that everyone has an idea worth sharing. Why Innovation Fails: The Missing Foundation We all want to empower our people, but innovation without the right foundation is a structure waiting to collapse. That foundation is Knowledge Management. Today’s industry often suffers from a "job anxiety" mentality, where knowledge is hoarded as power to secure a promotion. To be truly innovative, we must democratize that knowledge. We need to build "Knowledge Engines" where our people are recognized as the ultimate knowledge workers. Building a People-Driven OS To thrive in this digital age, we must integrate three pillars into a single, cohesive system: Operational Excellence: The standard for how we work putting people at the center of all we do. Knowledge Management: The "Community of Practice" where cross-functional talent builds trust and shares what works. Digital Transformation: The tools that accelerate our human potential. If an innovation doesn't improve the life of the person doing the work, it isn't innovation, it’s just overhead. We need to move from "No, because" to a "Yes, and" culture that tests small, learns fast, and scales what works. Are you ready to stop chasing tools and start empowering people? Follow me and stay tuned as I share more about the OpEx Operating System. This isn’t a tech OS; it’s a People-Driven OS designed for the future of AEC.
