Insurance ≠ Access Today, I performed a breast reduction for a patient who had been searching for FOUR YEARS for a plastic surgeon who would take her insurance. She met all the medical criteria, but her insurance company only reimbursed $1,000 for the procedure—when the average cost is $7,800 and in Austin, it’s often $13,000+. This is the reality of healthcare today: Insurance coverage doesn’t guarantee access. When reimbursement rates are too low, surgeons simply can’t afford to take these cases. The cost of running a practice is rising, while insurance payments are declining. I want to help. I want to offer these surgeries through insurance for my patients. But the system is making it impossible.
