Philosophy is famous for the "we don't know if anything is real as we cannot prove anything at all ever" but we can take this thought experiment and approach it from a scientific perspective. What are your senses? What exactly IS touch? If it's just an electrical signal then my brain has assigned a sensation linking touch to a specific impulse. Is the assigning the same for all humans? If it is not assigned mentally then that specific impulse my nerves in my skin creates must be 'touch' itself and that perception is naturally equal between everyone as that sensation originated outside of myself and was not produced by my brain but was rather perceived by my brain. The sky is full of billion-year-old light from long dead stars and vastly different galaxies. Everything in the night sky is a shadow of what was once there. The night sky isn't real in the sense that looking at a picture of 1920's New York is no longer real. If we cannot trust our own senses when put to deep questioning, the night sky is no longer real, and all of what we do every day has been constructed around a universally agreed-upon set of societal rules that are easily and often changed then there is no physical foundation upon which to exist. Only the mind. How far do you trust your own flesh? Is that flesh you or do you inhabit the flesh? Does the flesh inhabit you? If the flesh is you then you are as impermanent as the universe itself. You may be vast, complex, and beautiful but you are subject to space and time like the rest of existence, in a state of constant change and degradation as entropy leads towards nothingness. But this is a terribly long ways away. Earth will spin for 5 billion years more and humanity will continue to discover and change. If you are not the same person as you were at birth do you have the right to call yourself by the name on your birth certificate? If everything is subjective then the universe would fall apart as everything would balance upon the human mind to contextualize. This must not be true as the universe was here long before human minds were even possible and will exist for trillions of times longer after we are gone. So what does it all mean? Nothing! There is no meaning or purpose to life and that is a wonderful thing. If everyone had a purpose to their lives given before they were born no one would be happy. You are freed by a purposeless universe to become and do whatever you desire. The meaning of life then becomes to enjoy it as there is no goal in mind to its existence. Science has shown us more questions to answer with every observation we make. Time travel to the future is possible, spaceships the size of moons are plausible to create, there are trillions of worlds to discover and explore, and other universes existing is likely! So many purposes to give yourself and only about 100 years to decide! What is real? It's all subjective if we doubt our own senses and reasoning. If we do not then a more wonderful existence opens up as we can then move on from asking what the universe is to how it works. There are things out there that will bring us to our mental knees as we struggle to understand them, but we will. Because you or I may have only a short while but life has until the last black hole evaporates to discover everything. Will we ever reach a point where humanity knows everything there is to know about the universe and all others? When I was a child the entire world knew that the solar system had nine planets and a star. Now our solar system has thousands of planets, moons, and asteroids to visit and name. Imagine what we will discover tomorrow! Just a thought.
