Intro to Clicker Training
Introduction to the training clicker step one. Loading the Clicker: In this section we are going to bring value and meaning to the clicker through food (their kibble)! Yes, your dog will find this so easy and enjoyable. What about the dogs that may not be as food motivated? Can we make our dog more food motivated? YES! Some easy ways to make your dog more food motivated is to train late in the morning, past their normal feeding time. Don’t worry your dog will be ok, and won’t be upset with you if you even have them skip a meal. A hungry dog is a motivated dog that wants to work. We will then use their normal feeding, after they have to built their hunger, (motivation), to create the connection with the “click.” If you find your dog is still not interested in the kibble we may have to use a higher value reward. The first 3 days we are ONLY using the clicker for the structured, loading the clicking sessions, nothing else. Even after the 3 days, and about 6-9 structured sessions, it’s important to continue your structured loading clicker sessions for about 2 weeks. However, only after the first 3 days, we can also begin to wear a treat pouch and have the clicker on us throughout the day to HIGHLIGHT good behavior we wish for the puppy/dog to continue offering.
