Introduction to Open Systems Interconnection Model

Recommended Video quality: 360p. The OSI Model, that is, Open Systems Interconnection Model is a conceptual framework used to understand and standardize how different networking systems communicate. It divides the communication process into seven layers, each with specific functions. 7 Layers of the OSI Model are shown here. 1. Physical Layer (Layer 1) 2. Data Link Layer (Layer 2) 3. Network Layer (Layer 3) 4. Transport Layer (Layer 4) 5. Session Layer (Layer 5) 6. Presentation Layer (Layer 6) 7. Application Layer (Layer 7) Physical Layer : It deals with the physical connection between devices such as cables, switches, N I Cs. It concerned with transmission of raw data bits over a medium (electrical, optical, or radio signals) For Examples: Ethernet cables, fiber optics, Wi-Fi signals. Data Link Layer : It handles data transfer between directly connected nodes. Responsible for Media Access Control addressing and error detection. It divided into Media Access Control and Logical Link Control sublayers. Examples: MAC addresses, Ethernet, ARP, VLANs. Network Layer : It manages logical addressing (that is, IP addressing) and routing. Ensures packets are delivered to the correct destination across networks. Examples: IP, ICMP, routers. Transport Layer : It ensures reliable or fast data delivery based on protocols. It uses TCP means, reliable and connection-oriented. and UDP that means, faster and connectionless. It manages flow control, error checking and retransmission for Examples: TCP, UDP, port numbers. Session Layer : It manages sessions. that is, establishing, maintaining, and terminating connections it keeps tracks of which applications are communicating. Examples: RPC (Remote Procedure Call), NetBIOS. Presentation Layer : It converts data into a format readable by applications. that is, encryption and compression. It ensures proper data encoding, decoding, and security. for examples: SSL, TLS encryption, JPEG, MP3, GIF files etc. Application Layer : It is the interface between end-users and the network. It handles email, web browsing, file transfers etc. for examples: HTTP, FTP, SMTP, DNS, SSH. Analogy to Understand the OSI Model: Physical Layer : The delivery trucks, roads, and mailboxes. Data Link Layer : The envelope containing the address. Network Layer : The post office sorting and routing the letter. Transport Layer : Ensuring the letter reaches the recipient safely. Session Layer : Establishing a conversation between sender and receiver. Presentation Layer : Translating language, ensuring readability.
