Introduction to Perspective Drawing Perspective drawing is a drawing technique used to show depth, distance, and space on a flat surface like paper. It helps a drawing look realistic and three-dimensional (3D) instead of flat. We live in a 3D world, but we draw on a 2D surface. Perspective helps us show the world the way our eyes naturally see it. What is Perspective? Perspective is the method of drawing objects so that they appear smaller when they are far away and bigger when they are close. In simple words: 👉 Perspective shows how things look from a viewer’s point of view. 3 Elements of Perspective 1. Eye Level (Horizon Line) Eye level is the height of the viewer’s eyes. It is shown as a straight horizontal line. All vanishing points are placed on the eye level. When you sit, stand, or look down, the eye level changes. 2. Vanishing Point A vanishing point is a point where parallel lines appear to meet. It is usually placed on the eye level line. Objects look smaller as they move toward the vanishing point. 3. Station Point / View Point Station point is the position of the viewer. It decides from where the scene is being viewed. Changing the station point changes how the object looks. Types of Perspective 1. Linear Perspective 2. Curvilinear Perspective 3. Aerial / Atmospheric Perspective Linear Perspective can be 3 types Linear Perspective is divided into three main types, based on the number of vanishing points used. 1. One-Point Perspective Uses one vanishing point Best for front-view drawings Example: road, railway track, corridor 2. Two-Point Perspective Uses two vanishing points Shows objects from a corner angle Example: buildings, boxes, houses 3.
