In this lecture we recall the definition of the variance of a random variable and use it to state the central limit theorem. It is through the central limit theorem that we introduce the normal distribution and its associated interpretation of normal variation and statistical significance. An modelling example of 911 calls received in a given month is studied to identify if a statistical anomaly has been observed. We also perform a sensitivity analysis on our results.
