INVERSE STRETCH REFLEX
Turning Brain | Dr. Preeti Tyagi In this session, Dr. Preeti Tyagi explains the Inverse Stretch Reflex, an important neuromuscular feedback mechanism that helps regulate muscle force and protects muscles and tendons from overload. The lecture begins by understanding the location and function of the Inverse Stretch Reflex at the muscle–tendon junction. Unlike receptors that detect muscle stretch, the senses muscle tension, providing continuous feedback about the force produced during contraction. As tension increases, sensory signals reach the spinal cord and activate inhibitory pathways that reduce the activity of motor neurons supplying the same muscle. This protective response allows the muscle to relax before injury occurs. At the same time, opposing muscles are facilitated, supporting smooth, balanced, and coordinated movement. The session also highlights the functional and clinical relevance of the Inverse Stretch Reflex, particularly in activities requiring precision and controlled force. A comparison with the stretch reflex helps demonstrate how different sensory systems work together to maintain normal muscle tone and efficient motor control. Disruption of these mechanisms may contribute to abnormal tone and movement disorders.
