Information Systems' Doctoral Programs: Lessons and Challenges 09.Aug.2022 ISLA2022 (6th Conference on Information Systems in Latin America) Indira Guzman (Trident University, USA), George Marakas (Florida International University, USA), Cesar Alexandre Souza (University of Sao Paulo, Brazil), José Antonio Robles-Flores (ESAN, Peru) According to the 2020 report from theSurvey of Earned Doctorates (NSF, 2021), the number of people who earned adoctoral degree from American universities has increased in an average of 3.1%annually in the last twenty years. One of the reasons for this growth isbecause, in addition to the traditional Ph.D. programs offered full-time,applicants now look for professional doctorates where students prefer tocomplete doctoral programs online and on a part-time basis. The most popularones are the doctoral programs in business administration that offeropportunities to conduct research in many business areas, including informationsystems. Online doctoral programs will continue to grow and mainly cater tothose adult audiences. This panel will discuss the lessons, challenges, andopportunities new doctoral programs offer to those interested in informationsystems research worldwide, emphasizing Latin America. The panel aims to: Providean overview of what is expected in a Doctoral Program in Information Systems Review what is being done in Latin America Discuss the importance of research and publications for an IS Doctoral Program Discuss de main issues/problems that directors and students face in Latin America Panel participants IndiraGuzman, is a Professor of Management InformationSystems at Trident University International and Director of Doctoral Studies inthe College of Business. She obtained her Ph.D. in Information Science andTechnology from Syracuse University, School of Information Studies. Herresearch interests are in IT management, IT occupational culture, InformationSecurity, IT Workforce and Virtual Learning. GeorgeMarakas, is a Full Professor of Information Systemsand Business Analytics and the Associate Dean for Research and Doctoral Studiesat FIU Business. Dr. Marakas received his Ph.D. in Information Systems fromFlorida International University in 1995 and his MBA from Colorado StateUniversity. Prior to his position at FIU, he was a tenured member of seniorfaculty at University of Kansas and the Kelley School of Business at IndianaUniversity, as well as an assistant professor at University of Maryland andadjunct faculty member at Helsinki School of Economics. Most recently, he heldthe position of Director of Doctoral Programs at FIU Business. CesarAlexandre de Souza, is professor at the BusinessSchool of the University of São Paulo (FEA/USP) teaching undergraduate(bachelor) and graduate (MsC and PhD) courses in the topics of InformationSystems, Statistics and Machine Learning. He was the vice-coordinator of thePhD program at FEA/USP from 2016 to 2020and Editor-In-Chief of REGE (Revista de Gestão) from 2009 to 2015. He isco-coordinator of NETS research group at FEA/USP (Group for Researching DigitalTechnologies and Quantitative Models in Business Research) José Antonio Robles-Flores, Director of theDoctoral Program at ESAN Graduate School of Business in Perú. An associateprofessor of Information Systems. His research focuses on the impact ofinformation technology on businesses. He has published in journals like JAIS,DSS, CAIS, CACM, Journal of World Business, RELCASI, etc. Jose Antonio obtainedhis Ph.D. in Information Systems from Arizona State University, an MBA fromESAN Lima, and his engineering degree in computer science from FranciscoMarroquín University in Guatemala.
