Jonathan Trevor is Associate Professor of Management Practice at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford. His area of expertise includes organizational theory and effectiveness, with a focus on organizational design, human resource management and the future of work. Hierarchical organizations are becoming a thing of the past as the future generations no longer want to work at companies with a steady, guaranteed career for the high performers. They’re looking for flat, flexible, agile organizations, and a deeper meaning to their work. A good check and a high-status title is no longer enough. The issue now becomes for organizations to complete that transformation while still managing risk, optimizing the organization and keeping KPIs on track – all things that the hierarchical model does very well. The future of work is a land of opportunities for the organizations, that can find the right balance between the somewhat chaotic and network-based startup culture and the efficient but also inflexible bureaucratic model.
