Jumping Spiders Recognize Their Humans. Wild Release Surprise. Janice the Jumper.
Today was supposed to be a final goodbye, but Janice, my bold jumping spider, had a different plan. After months of caring for her, the moment finally came to release her into the Pennsylvania wilderness, a transition from her enclosure to the vast undergrowth of the woodpile. However, what happened next defied every expectation I had about arachnid behavior. Despite never being handled or "tamed" during her time with me, Janice did something I never thought possible: she turned away from her freedom and navigated the brush to find her way back to me, eventually climbing right up my leg. This 14-minute journey captures a stunning display of recognition and choice, proving that even the smallest creatures are capable of forming bonds we are only just beginning to understand. CHANCES FOR HER SURVIVAL: With a fresh molt and a full stomach, she is in the absolute prime of her life. Since she molted a month ago, her exoskeleton is fully hardened, and she’s at peak physical performance. Given that she’s an adult female Phidippus audax released in late April, here is what her "itinerary" likely looks like for the next few weeks: 1. Seeking a Mate In Pennsylvania, late spring is the beginning of the breeding season. Since she is a mature adult, her primary drive now, above even hunting, will be to find a male. Bold jumping spiders have elaborate courtship dances; being well-fed and hydrated gives her the stamina to be "picky" about her suitors, which is great for the local spider genetics! 2. Nesting Site Selection The log pile is prime real estate for a nursery. She will likely find a deep, dry crevice to spin a thick, multi-layered silk retreat. The Benefit: These nests are weather-resistant and provide a stable environment for her to eventually lay an egg sac. The Timing: By the time she lays eggs (if she mates soon), the Pennsylvania weather will be consistently warm, ensuring her spiderlings emerge during the height of the summer insect boom. 3. Tactical Hunting Because she is "fat," she doesn't need to take risks. She can afford to sit in a sun-drenched spot on those logs and wait for high-quality prey to come to her, rather than wandering far and exposing herself to birds or wasps. The Big Picture This is essentially a "perfect release." Many people make the mistake of releasing spiders when they are hungry or thin, which forces the spider to hunt desperately. By sending her out "loaded for bear" in a sheltered, prey-rich environment during a warm spell, she has a 90% or higher chance of successfully reintegrating. She’s likely currently basking in the sun on one of those logs, using those four pairs of eyes to track every movement in your yard.
