A note for this song particularly: my family and extended family congregated at Jane's house in Gunnison, CO all my life. Jane passed yesterday. She was my father's first cousin and the two families were always close, farming adjacent fields in Oklahoma. We'd gather to enjoy Cattlemen's Days in Gunnison, and the longest-running rodeo in the West. Lots of food, conversation, card games, homemade ice cream, and all facilitated by Jane's warm, pragmatic touch. I wrote this song about twenty years ago there at her house where everyone was playing cards but I was looking at old family photos. I regret not thinking to revisit such an old, nearly forgotten song before her passing, because I think she would have liked it. It's been extremely comforting over the years to have this touchstone with my family, where one is loved and accepted just the same as always. There's a sense of never really having to grow up all the way because the steady, grounded adults are in the room. Jane was the epitome of that — cheerful, wry, grounded, and just making things work out beautifully with quiet flair. She was a gifted pianist and watercolor artist as well, and her gentle impact on me was one of beauty, presence, consideration and grace. I'm glad to be with my family when the chance arises, and I hope to see her and the rest on the other side too. Goodbye, Jane, and thank you for everything. I love you.
