Kerbal Space Program: Structural Panel Penetration Tests (science!)

After the siege video I felt a need to find out just what could penetrate, or better yet destroy, structural panels. Everything did not go as expected, and I am still unable to determine a consistent explanation as to why some things quantum tunnel through the panels, or what the requirements are for panel destruction.
