Hi everyone! Today we are going to practice finding the maximum distance travelled by a particle moving in a straight line FROM the origin O. Do note the difference between distance vs displacement! While distance is the length of the actual path between two locations (scalar quantity), displacement is the length of the shortest path between two locations (vector quantity, direction is considered). In these examples, we are simply dealing with particles traveling in a straight line. Thus, we can get the maximum distance from O by: 1️⃣ Differentiating the displacement equation with resect to t 2️⃣ Equate this to 0 3️⃣ Find the value of t (the time at which the max displacement happens) 4️⃣ Sub t into the displacement equation 5️⃣ If this gives a negative value, take the absolute number as distance is a scalar quantity Acknowledgements to Ho S.
