Knowing Your Role - From Spark FX 2021

I original made this presentation in February 2021 for the Spark FX Conference. I was part of the 'Meet the Masters' compositing panel and between the five of us we produced a series of presentations called 'V01 to Done' that attempted to cover all the skills a compositor would need to see a shot from beginning to end. I did two short presentations that covered more of the soft skills of compositing, rather than technical Nuke skills. In this video I talk about how visual effects require you to think technically and creatively at the same time, and how most people are better at one than the other. I also talk about how some projects allow you more creative freedom than others, and how you can change your approach to the role of compositor so you can be more content with the part you play in the process.
