KOALIFICATIONS 1
In March 2025 I spent a week in Tunisia. During that time I made over 30 tracks for my forthcoming collaborative mix with Joe Clockwork. I used: - an iPhone 11; - Koala Sampler; - a modest library of samples. This is video loosely explains that process. Except that it’s on an iPad rather than an iPhone (because big screens are easier to see, but less convenient when on holiday). I had no great plan when creating this video. This may be apparent. If I was to do a Pete Makes Beats session, it would probably be similar to this. It’s all done in real time because people who don’t plan things don’t edit them either. Maybe some do. I didn’t. This video is how I make beats on Koala. Sometimes I use a host, resample from other apps, and use external effects. I didn’t do that on my iPhone so don’t expect that to happen here. This is standalone Koala. Mano e Koala, one might say. I use this first part of the process as a sketchbook or playground. The next stage happens on a computer using Ableton Live, which is where I add some degree of structure and additional effects. I could do much of this process within Koala using AUv3 plugins, but I like splitting things between two different devices/workflows. Also, over the years I’ve spent hundreds on VST plugins and the idea of not using them is as absurd to me as it is anathema. Exporting things to a DAW isn’t an essential part of the process. Do whatever suits you. Or don’t(, man).
