L52: SoC: IP integration
Welcome to Lecture 52 of the course "Digital System Design" by Prof. Nitin Chandrachoodan Full Course: https://study.iitm.ac.in/es/course_pages/EE2103.html Video Overview This lecture offers a comprehensive overview of System-on-Chip (SoC) design and the many factors involved in building modern integrated systems. We begin with the concept of intellectual property (IP) reuse and how it allows designers to integrate pre-verified components such as CPUs, GPUs, and memory controllers efficiently. The session explores bus architectures and the shift toward Network-on-Chip (NoC) for scalable communication across complex SoC designs. We also examine hardware/software partitioning and how it plays a critical role in balancing performance, power, and cost.Using real-world mobile SoC examples, we analyze the challenges of integrating heterogeneous components including processors, memory subsystems, accelerators, and wireless modems—all within a single chip. Finally, the lecture looks ahead to emerging trends in SoC design such as domain-specific architectures (DSAs), 3D integration, and chiplets, which promise to push performance and efficiency even further. This session is ideal for learners and engineers interested in embedded systems, mobile processors, and advanced digital design. About IIT Madras' online Bachelor of Science programme IIT Madras offers four-year BS programmes that aim to provide quality education to all, irrespective of age, educational background, or location. The BS programme has multiple levels, which provide flexibility to students to exit at any of these levels. Depending on the courses completed and credits earned, the learner can receive a Foundation Certificate from IITM CODE (Centre for Outreach and Digital Education), Diploma(s) from IIT Madras, or BSc/BS Degrees from IIT Madras.
