The iPhone has now become the most important piece of gear in my large format arsenal. Check out some of the apps that make my life a lot easier when shooting large format landscapes. Here is a short list of the iPhone apps I use the most: Holders (free) - I use it on every single shot. I don't carry notes with me in the field, so this is how I keep track of which film I have loaded in each holder. Also, I can record notes about exposure, development, and anything else I need. The Photographer's Ephemeris - ($8.99) Not exclusive to large format, but a must have for landscape shooters. Gives sunset/sunrise information (among MANY other things) and really helps when scouting out a location. Massive Dev Chart ($8.99) - Not exclusive to large format, this is what I use exclusively to develop black and white film. Reciprocity Timer ($1.99) - I carry NO reciprocity notes with me in the field; if my iPhone ever gets dropped in the water I'm in big trouble! I use this app on every single shot. Not only does it calculate reciprocity failure, it also calculates bellows extension compensation and filter compensation. Also, when combined with my light meter, I find it very helpful for metering using the Zone System. Mark II Artist's Viewfinder ($24.99) - OK, this is expensive for an app, but it might be the best money I've spent in large format. Also, it can be used for any format. Essentially, you can input your camera format and lens and the screen will show you exactly what your composition will look like. I have found that I can better examine and fine tune my composition when I see it on my iPhone screen instead of looking through the ground glass, especially in dark situations when the scene may not be viewable in its entirety. This has made scouting and composing SO much faster! One note, when using a lens wider than the iPhone's native focal length (~31mm on a 35mm equivalent) you will have to use a clip-on wide angle lens for accurate coverage. I have to use one of these lenses when I have my 90mm lens mounted on my 4x5. I cannot recommend this app enough! Please note, I'm not affiliated with any of these apps in any way. I purchased them all through the iTunes store. I just wanted to share some of the apps I use frequently to make life a little easier as a large format photographer.
