Layering: Rhythmic Bass
In this video we start to look at layering synths. I break down a three layer bass that consists of a sub and two mid range elements. I've found the key to layering is to give each layer a specific purpose sonically and tonally (i.e. a heavily distorted layer to add some gritty texture or a layer that is pitched up and octave to add high end). This will help you build a cleaner sound and also help you address overlapping elements in your mix. Let' s say the mid-range portion of my bass is interfering with another element like a violin. I can edit the layering accordingly to fit better in my mix (by panning, volume, eq, etc.) and not affect the other layers in the sound. If the bass was made with one synth I would not have the ability to edit problem areas as efficiently. I would have to pan or turn down the whole sound! So when it comes to layering 1) Have a general idea of how you want the element to sound and 2) try to give each layer a single purpose and 3) experiment. Thanks for watching! Happy Producing!
