Before missionaries arrived with books and pens, our ancestors used music, art, and dance to pass down history. Chants carried our voices, tapa held our patterns, and siva moved our stories. In this video, Maryjane & Moemoana Schwenke perform a powerful siva Samoa that tells the story of the tamatai Samoa or taupou. The dance honors siva as a mesina—a treasured part of our culture.
