In this final installment of the learning models mini-series, we survey how Bayesian and non-Bayesian learning models have been applied across multiple fields of economics to resolve empirical puzzles about human behavior under uncertainty. The core insight is that information is costly to obtain, and this friction generates rich, testable predictions about behavior in education, labor markets, industrial organization, and family economics. Slides used in the video are available here: https://raw.githack.com/tyleransom/structural-econ-guy/master/13-Learning/08-Applications.pdf Source code for the slides is here: https://github.com/tyleransom/structural-econ-guy/blob/master/13-Learning/08-Applications.tex In education, learning models help explain why students drop out of high school and college, why they sort into certain majors, and why they leave science programs at high rates, often because they arrive overconfident in their abilities. In labor markets, learning explains why young workers switch occupations frequently and why wages become increasingly correlated with ability measures that employers cannot directly observe at hire. In industrial organization, learning underlies brand switching behavior and the informational role of advertising. And in family economics, cohabitation emerges naturally as a rational strategy for couples to learn about match quality before committing to marriage.
