In this lecture we discuss extrinsic point defects in crystalline solids. Both isovalent and aliovalent doping are covered, with an emphasis on charge compensating mechanisms associated with aliovalent doping in ionic compounds, transition metal compounds and semiconductors. Kröger-Vink notation is presented and explained. This lecture was designed and delivered by Patrick Woodward for use in the course Solid State Chemistry (Chem 7330) at Ohio State University.
