This lecture starts with an estimation of the lattice energy of KCl using the Born-Meyer equation. That value is then compared with the experimental lattice energy determined using a Born-Haber cycle, and the two are shown to be in reasonably good agreement. In the second half of the lecture we consider the structures of MX2 metal dihalides. This lecture was designed and delivered by Patrick Woodward for use in the course Solid State Chemistry (Chem 7330) at Ohio State University.
